know how to help our hogs
For anyone who follows our Twitter or Facebook feeds you'll know we seem to have a habit of rescuing wildlife. We've seen all sorts from injured pigeons and frogs to swifts and hedgehogs.
We should say, we don't attempt to care for the animals ourselves, only on some occasions overnight before taking them to a specialist rescue centre where they can get the right medical and professional care.
Today, it was this fella, a hedgehog found out in the day, which is always a sign something is wrong. He was given some food, they can eat cat or dog food - not fish based and drink water. Please no milk, despite the advice in the 1980's from well-meaning parents it can make hedgehogs very ill or even kill them.
We help out Hogs Rest Hedgehog Rescue in Coventry from time to time, Lorna is always on hand to offer advice and take in any injured or sick hedgehogs. She is also always in need of cat food, wet and dry and old newspapers.
The Amazon Wish List is here, but it is cheaper to buy locally and drop off at the centre.
The advice from Hogs Rest if you find a hedgehog
is:
A HEDGEHOG IS LYING OUT DURING THE DAY, IT MEANS THAT SOMETHING IS WRONG, SERIOUSLY WRONG.
On finding a hedgehog, please use gardening gloves to handle, very carefully pick it up and place it in a high-sided box.
Use an old towel or fleece jumper to line the box. You can also add a hot water bottle or plastic drinks bottle filled with warm water (not boiling) and wrapped in a towel to allow it to warm the hog gently. The hog will need to be able to escape from the heat source.
Place box somewhere quiet.
The clock will be ticking 'ACT QUICKLY'
The hedgehog should be taken to the nearest specialist rescue centre.
